The temporary Steering Committee of the Libertarian Party formed in December 1971 as the successor to the Committee to Form a Libertarian Party and existed up through the appointment of the Temporary Executive Committee in February 1972.

David Nolan related that the below announcement from Richard Nixon on August 15, 1971 was the straw that broke the camel's back that caused them to finally decided to start the new party. Ironically at the time the announcement came over the TV, the initial group was meeting at his home to talk about this decision.
